Necklines
and Draping:
Necklines are important in that they frame the face. As with a work of art,
if the frame is faulty, it detracts from the beauty of that which it frames.
That is why it is important to know how to properly draft a neckline that fits
well, doesn't gap, and flatters the wearer. Kenneth starts out with blouse necklines
such as the Boat neckline, the Oval neckline, and the high faced neckline. From
there, he goes to "neckline theory"--this is an invention of his teacher
Simmin Sethna, whereby you can draft a neckline that is low in front and back,
that will not gap or slip off the shoulders. After this, a variety of novelty
necklines are shown. Examples are the Grecian neckline, the off-shoulder neckline,
and the sweetheart neckline.
Draped necklines
start the section on draping. After drafting what Kenneth calls the "draping
basic" (the "sloper" for drafting the draped necklines), he shows
draped as well as cowl necklines. To finish, he discusses flat-pattern draping.
It starts with the formula for "slash-and-spread" draping, and shows
parallel and sunburst cascade draping effects.
